Celonis Looks to Brightest Minds in Academia with the Launch of Engineering and Innovation Lab on the RWTH Aachen campus

Cooperation between the two global pioneers in process mining and execution management motes synergies between science and business applications

Aachen and Munich - May 20, 2022 - Celonis, the global leader in execution management, today announced the opening of its new Engineering and Innovation Lab on the Melaten campus of the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) Aachen University. The launch of this dedicated site further expands Celonis’  strategic collaboration with the world's leading university in the field of process mining, and this cooperation will accelerate and advance research and development, as well as the training of future specialists, in the fields of execution management and process mining.

The focus of the new Celonis Engineering and Innovation Lab, which will be ready for occupancy in October 2022, is on pushing the boundaries of emerging process mining capabilities such as process recognition, predictive analytics, data-driven simulation, and machine learning. The goal is to drive innovation and new approaches to process mining and execution management in close collaboration with the experienced scientists at RWTH Aachen University, thereby also strategically expanding the global leadership of both German research and Celonis in this area.

"Celonis is successfully translating insights from cutting-edge research on process mining into technologies that thousands of companies can use to improve their processes and thus their performance," emphasizes Professor Wil van der Aalst, who is considered a pioneer in the field of process mining, holds the Chair of Process and Data Science at RWTH Aachen University and also serves as Chief Scientist at Celonis. "By installing a Celonis Engineering and Innovation Lab right on RWTH Aachen campus, entrepreneurial innovation intersects with a  unique knowledge community, whose joint research and collaboration will undoubtedly yield advancements in process mining and execution management.”

"With the new Lab on the RWTH campus, Celonis is even closer to the pulse of research on process mining and execution management. Together, we aim to leverage the most advanced academic insights and technological innovations to enable companies to manage their entire business processes in a data-driven and intelligent way, enabling them to perform at levels they never thought possible," said Bastian Nominacher, co-CEO and co-founder of Celonis.

"Establishing this lab on the RWTH Aachen Campus embodies our RWTH motto, which is ‘Knowledge. Impact. Networks’,” said Professor Ulrich Rüdiger, Rector of RWTH Aachen University. "This is a clear effort between two organizations to share knowledge and make an impact. Building on the research of Professor Wil van der Aalst and his team, a young company here in Germany has pioneered entirely new ways of improving business performance based on process mining. Together, we will continue to pioneer solutions in this field."

"For RWTH, it is a strong signal that a young company like Celonis is coming to Aachen because that means it recognizes both talent and a spirit of entrepreneurship here. We are building a special ecosystem in Aachen – for instance, with the establishment of the Collective Incubator – in which we can specifically develop talent with our partners," explains Professor Malte Brettel, Prorector for Business and Industry at RWTH Aachen University.

With more than 47,000 students, RWTH Aachen University is the largest technical university in Germany and one of the most important talent hotbeds for IT specialists. Celonis plans joint research projects, PhD positions, lectures, seminars and events with the university. Students also have the opportunity to experiment with Celonis software and large data sets.

This collaboration goes hand in hand with Celonis' Academic Alliance activities. As part of this cooperation program for education, research, and teaching in process mining and execution management, Celonis is working with more than 600 educational institutions worldwide. The goal is to optimally prepare the next generation for the future of data-based and intelligent business transformation. For example, students, teachers, and researchers receive free access to Celonis technology and certification programs and direct support for teaching and research projects through the program.
